HI folks

Iv just got back into bikes and bought a '79 xs750. Discovered its got a nasty oil leak from the cam chain tunnel between head and the bores.  I see a couple of fellas have discused this but i was wondering how you got on sorting it?  Its coming off the road for winter so im going to remove head and bores. Genuine gaskets are very expensive so was going to use pattern parts.  What are your views on this? Is there any pit falls i should consider before attacking the job?

Thanks Rich

Not really pit falls as such. The main problem can be geting the barrels off the studs. A lot of corrosion builds up on them and when you try to separate them, it can be touch. Clean as muchof the crud off them prior to trying to spit, and be careful not to shear any head studs off. Soak the nut for 24hrs in release oil/WD40 before hand.

There is a tip on my site at http://www.xs750e.com Hint-tips page I think.

The after market seals are OK as far as I can tell. I bought the Athena set which I'm still working on.

While you're in there I recommend that you replace the cam chain, and lap and grind all the valves. Might as well, as the chain is only about £30 to change and they can be quite noisy.

Keep us posted with photos if you can, other people would really benefit from your experience.

I'll try to post some of mine too.

:)

Stripped the head off and found the problem. Some cheeky monkey has lifted it before, seen it needs a major de-coke and put it back on without doing the work.  Hence the old gasket leaked. At least I've found it.

As i used to be a car mechanic shouldn't be too much of a problem.  Already decoked head and valves and should have them lapped in nicely and repainted by monday.

I was amazed it was running as well as it did. What a stolwart!

Havent worked out how to post pics yet.

If you look at the bottom of your reply post, you'll see a tiny little text below the main window, to the bottom left.

Now that i know how to post photos take a look at my poor head and valves

Three stages of cleaning

No3 untouched     No2 wire bushed    No1 polished

And the valves...

She should have been missing, pinking and backfiring but the old girl was doing well.

They are now lapped in and im setting the valve clearences.  Once the Head is rebuilt and painted it will be the cylinder bores next. Its my first time working on a bike engine (used to cars) but a quick eyeball showed no score marks and it wasnt burning oil when running. So fingers crossed.

I will keep you up dated on my progress.

PS wish i had took photos of bike before I took if off the road for a comparison.

If anyone wants me to do a more blow by blow posting let me know.

Rich

did you remove the head with the engine in the frame ?

i'm rebuilding my bike and it will make it a hell of a lot easyer
to replace the engine whitout the cilinder head on
less chance to ruin the new paint job

Hi Shadowman

Yes the engine is still in the frame. I have the 750 and the horn made it tight. I removed cams with a spanner and dont think i will get a torque wrench on the cam cap nuts when i rebuild. I plan to remove horn and fit cylinder head complete with cams when i rebuild.

Good Luck with it. Keep in touch.

I have already build up the cilinderhead
