Whats on
My wifes son has A XS750 1T5 from 1977
It used to belong to his father , but the man died some 15 years ago
By that time the XS was already broken to parts because they where going to restore it
by then it had been outside and not driven for 7 years or so
so it was in A real sorry state.

I've been looking at this mess for about 10 years
and finally I found the money to start the project up again
and I bought this 1978 XS

When I came home whit It I found it in A to good shape to use as A donor bike .
And because last year I've sold my 1987 Honda 700 Shadow (still got the nickname) I was in need of a bike too

So the quest for A other XS went on
and I ran in to this one

It has A minor oil leak on the left side cover gasked
But the real good thing is that it has A 3 in 2 exhaust

This will be the donor bike

THE START :
first thing to do strip the old frame and get it sandblasted
and powdercoated

the rotten thing though was the Righthand side bolt witch holds the swingarm in place
W'eve tried to get it loose for A few monts now without any thing happening
Lots of WD40 Heating it up and so on
Finaly I wanted to try it for the last time white A viseplier and a hammer
Or it would be drilling out
To my suprise the d***ned thin went loose without any kind of violence

Now this is the first foto of the rebuild and there are more fotos to come
It will going to be A long time  project but I'll keep updating when something happens

Greetings Han "The shadowman"

Scuzzi when there are some typing errors
i'm dutch And it was 25 years ago that I used english on a daly base

Han, you have 2 good platforms for restoration. I am sure that with a little effort they will be up and running. Have fun with them, they will be worth every hour you invest. Doug

OK I.m in the sh*tpitt again

The red one has A worn clutch so the simple thing to do is put in A new one

orderd the clutch plates new springs and new gaskeds
so far so good.

removing the parts to get acces to the generator cover , no problem
removing the cover , no problem
removing the rotor PROBLEM >  the bold went out smootly
the rotor however doesn't .
what ever I've tried it's still in it's place

tried it with A pooler tried it with A press bold tried heating it with A gas burner
still no movement

what am I doing wrong here
heres the pic of the situation

the rotten dents on the rotor show that someones been at it before me

Hi

The easiest way by far is to hold the engine, use a rotor drawing bolt on the centre screw.

All you do is screw in an M16x1.5 (metric) bolt of 70mm length, and knock it with a spanner and rubber hammer in a clockwise direction, an d it'll fall off.

I went through the same thing myself.

If you're lucky, some of the bolts on the puller you have might fit. I used the centre bolt from a spring compressor I had for my car.

Worked a treat.

:)

recently the work on the XS came to a hold
the supplier who where I orderd the bolt to get the rotor off
let me down so I have to find someone else

And that isn't as easy as it sounds  'cause there aren't that many suppliers around here

but as soon as I get the darn bolt I will start updating again

HURRAY

I finally got the bold I've ordered

And it did the trick

Now I can do some work again
So far so good

Everything went on smootly

And I got out the clutchplates and they where realy worn off

Then I found out that There was something wrong
there was a piece off steelwire mingeled up in the clutch inner housing

And the place where it belonged was not hard to find

It should have been in place in front of the last metal clutch plate
and now I'm trying to get it back in place .
And find it A tricky job to do with the clutch drum in place
so I'm Going to remove the whole clutch drum and put it on the workbench
its easier that way , than sitting on my knees in front of the bike.

And even that problem is nearly solved because the bikelift table is almost ready and then I can work standing  or sitting

Thats it for now updates will follow in A few days
First I have a funeral tomorrow of A 81 year old motorfreak
He rode his bike untill a few monts ago
And just became special member of the motorclub for vintage bikers

grtx Han the shadowman

P.S. And yes I know that the kickstarterspring isn't hooking up at the right spot
I solved that one already

It's been A while but I'm still bussy

today I replaced the camchain tensioner the treath inside the housing was gone so the tensioner wouln't stay in it's place

but I had A good spare from the bits of XS wich is ment to be rebuild

after that it was time to fire it up again
no messy noises anymore from the engine the new clutch is working good

BUT HURRAY the next problem is there already

when the bike heats up it hardly won't come down the revs

It has a good gas reaction when reving up,  but when I close the throtlle
I't keeps running about 4000 rpm
or It comes very slowly down in revs

I've checked the vacuum lines to the fuelcocks and the seem to be fine

i've checked the rubbers between the cillinder and carbs
on leaks and trhey seem to be good as well

so the main false air problems can be ruled out

So can it be that the vacuum sync on the carbs is wrong
or what else can cause this

Silly question, but have you double checked the slow idle screw between #1 and 2 carbs ?
